Jon Cox was attending U.C. Berkeley with the intent of continuing on to law school when a police ride-a-long in his home town of Walnut Creek changed the direction of his life. He graduated from U.C. Berkeley in 1982, left the law firm where he had been working in Oakland, and attended the law enforcement academy at Los Medanos College. After graduating number six in his class, Jon was soon hired by the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff in 1984. He spent 25 years with Office of the Sheriff working in many different assignments to include the contract cities of San Ramon and Oakley.
Through his extensive training, on-the-job experience and education, Jon was able to take advantage of several promotional opportunities within the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff. He served as the Chief of Police in the contract city of Oakley from 2002 until 2005 when he promoted to the rank of Captain, and was assigned as the Patrol Division Commander for the Office of the Sheriff. Jon is a graduate of the POST Executive Development Course, as well as the West Point Leadership Program. He took great pride in the development of the Sheriff’s Office Chaplain’s Program, and was successful in obtaining numerous grants including the AVOID the 25 DUI enforcement team. What Jon loves most about law enforcement is the ability to serve so many people in so many different ways. He recently retired from the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff in May 2009.
Jon currently serves as the President for the Northern California Chapter of Peace Officers for Christ International, and has assisted on numerous trips to Louisiana to serve fellow officers who have been personally impacted in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Gustav. He has been involved in mentoring young men for the last 17 years, and serving in his local church. Jon has been married to his wife Betty for 24 years, and they have two grown children, Jarrett and Valerie.
Throughout his career Jon always maintained the goal to someday return to a small town law enforcement agency with a strong sense of community. He is now looking forward to using his skills and experience to serve the citizens of Dixon as their next Chief of Police.
