Construction Requirements Within City Limits
The Fire Department utilizes the 2016 edition of the California Building and Fire Codes.
Any structure that exceeds 3,000 square feet, including attached residential garage areas, requires the installation of fire sprinklers and must adhere to 2016 NFPA standards for installation.
All "H" (hazardous), "R-1" (hotel, motel, apartments), and R-3 (single family homes and duplexes) Occupancies as defined in the California Building Code are to have fire sprinkler systems installed regardless of the building size.
Additionally any existing residence that adds more than 50% of the total square footage or more than 3000 square feet total requires a fire sprinkler system to be installed throughout the entire residence.
Fire department connections for fire sprinkler systems are to be located within forty feet of a fire hydrant.
Fire hydrant spacing is 300 feet maximum and the model of hydrant used is Clow #960.
Fire hydrants are to be kept clear of vegetation, fencing, or other obstructions for at least three feet in any direction from the hydrant. NO PARKING IS PERMITTED IN FRONT OF ANY FIRE HYDRANT.
Fire extinguishers are to be mounted in easily accessible locations and are to be mounted no higher than forty-eight inches from the floor to the bottom of the extinguisher. The minimum acceptable rating for a fire extinguisher is 2:A 10:BC. The rating may be higher depending upon the type of business. Fire extinguishers are to be serviced annually.
An address must be posted that it is readily visible from the street. The minimum height permitted for commercial use is six inches and is increased depending on the height of the building and/or the building distance from the street. Residential addresses are to be internally illuminated and are to be at least four inches in height.
Any building or facility that has a fire alarm, fire suppression system, or under special circumstances as determined by the Chief, will require a KNOX box to be installed on the premises at a location to be determined by the Fire Department.
Fire department access roads shall comply with the requirements found in the California Fire Code Section 503, 2016 edition and Appendix D.
Any gate to a facility shall require the approval of the Fire Department. All electrically/mechanically operated gates shall have a KNOX keyway installed to operate the gate at any hour.
Any food cooking operations that produce grease laden vapors must be protected with a UL300 fire suppression system.
